Barbara Allen by Royal Dadmun (1922)
CD 4, track 29
Although the ballads of the British Isles have long been recognized as important roots in the development of country music, very few were recorded in the acoustic era (perhaps because of their lyrical length?). When the companies did set an old ballad to wax, they did so for educational purposes, as with Royal Dadmun’s 1922 recording of “Barbara Allen.”
