The Wreck on the Southern Old 97 by Henry Whitter (1923)
CD 6, track 5
Henry Whitter’s waxing of “The Wreck of the Southern Old 97,” about engineer Steve Broady’s fateful derailment near Danville, Virginia, in the fall of 1903, is the first recording of the future country staple. His version would be the inspiration for Vernon Dalhart’s blockbuster version a year later.
