A very special Sunday edition of our Before the Big Bang daily reveal: another newly discovered recording by the Standard Quartette, this time it’s a pristine brown wax cylinder of “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” made in 1897. The Standard Quartette was only the second African American group known to have recorded, and this selection pushes their output to a slightly later period than previously known. Membership uncertain at this time.
